How insurance works for telehealth psychiatry
California's telehealth parity law requires most insurance plans to cover telehealth psychiatric visits at the same rate as in-person care. If your plan is listed above as accepted, your behavioral health benefits apply to telehealth appointments at Umbrella Mental Health in the same way they would apply to any in-network behavioral health provider.
What this typically means in practice:
- You may have a copay per visit, depending on your plan and benefit tier
- Your deductible may need to be met before insurance covers a portion of costs
- Out-of-pocket maximums apply across all covered services for the year
- Behavioral health benefits are generally separate from medical benefits — but both contribute toward your out-of-pocket maximum
The best way to understand your specific benefits is to call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask about behavioral health or mental health coverage for telehealth outpatient psychiatric services.
How to verify your benefits before your first appointment
Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask:
- "Does my plan cover outpatient behavioral health services?"
- "Is Umbrella Mental Health in-network?" (NPI: available on request)
- "Does my plan cover telehealth psychiatric services at the same rate as in-person?"
- "What is my copay or coinsurance for outpatient behavioral health visits?"
- "Do I have a deductible for behavioral health, and how much has been met?"
- "How many visits per year are covered under my behavioral health benefit?"
Having this information before your first appointment helps avoid surprises.
Self-pay and out-of-network options
Self-pay rates are available for patients without insurance or those whose plans are not accepted. Contact the practice for current rates: (323) 970-2625 or info@umhcare.com.
Superbills for out-of-network reimbursement
If you have out-of-network behavioral health benefits, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement from your insurance company. A superbill — a detailed receipt containing the diagnosis and procedure codes required by your insurer — can be provided upon request. You submit this to your insurance company directly. Reimbursement rates and processes vary by plan; check your out-of-network benefits before assuming this option will cover a significant portion.
