What medication management actually involves

Medication management appointments are 30 minutes. They are not refill visits. At each appointment, you'll cover:

  • Changes in symptoms since the last visit — what's improved, what hasn't, what's new
  • How you're tolerating the medication — side effects, sleep, energy, appetite, mood
  • Medication response at the current dose — is it working as expected?
  • Any dose adjustments that may improve the response or reduce side effects
  • Prescription renewal or changes, when appropriate
  • Coordination with your therapist, PCP, or other providers

The relationship matters. A provider who knows your history doesn't need to ask the same questions every visit — they're tracking your trajectory over time.

Monitoring and lab requirements

Some medications require periodic lab monitoring. Lithium requires serum level checks and renal and thyroid monitoring. Valproate requires liver function and drug levels. Antipsychotics require metabolic monitoring. When labs are needed, you'll be directed to a local lab — results are reviewed at the following appointment.

Controlled substances — stimulants for ADHD, benzodiazepines when clinically appropriate — require CURES checks and follow a more structured follow-up schedule. The specifics depend on the medication and the clinical situation.

How often are follow-ups?

The frequency depends on where you are in treatment. Early in treatment, appointments are typically monthly to monitor response and make adjustments. Once things are stable, the interval can extend to every 2–3 months, sometimes longer. Controlled substance medications typically require more frequent follow-ups.

You won't be left without a prescription between visits — refills and follow-ups are coordinated as part of ongoing care.

Coordination with other providers

Many patients see a therapist alongside their psychiatric care. Coordination between a prescribing provider and a therapist — when both parties are in the loop — typically produces better outcomes than care in silos. If you see a therapist, their perspective can inform medication management. If you don't, a referral can be arranged.

Coordination with your primary care provider is also available when relevant — especially when psychiatric medications interact with other prescriptions.
